Over 600 Years of History
Why “La Cloche”?
The name “La Cloche” dates back to the medieval designation “Hostellerie de la Cloiche”, referring to the bell that once signaled the inn’s opening to travelers. This audible sign, visible from Rue Guillaume (now Rue de la Liberté), quickly became a familiar landmark for passing merchants and pilgrims.

1424
An Exceptional Heritage Since 1424
The first recorded mention, dated 1424, confirms the existence of a distinguished coaching inn already offering food and lodging to visitors to Dijon. From its earliest days, the establishment benefited from its strategic location in the heart of the city, steadily building its reputation through the centuries.

1594
The First Stones of a Legend
In the 15th century, the Hostellerie de la Cloiche stood out for its rustic architecture, with walls built from local stone and steeply pitched roofs typical of Burgundian houses. Archives from 1594 and 1670 confirm its status as a renowned inn, frequented by nobility and traveling craftsmen alike.

1884
The Golden Age and Transformation
In 1902, Louis Gorges acquired the property and initiated extensive renovations: dormer windows were added to the roof, and a new wing was built in 1926, modernizing the structure while preserving its Belle Époque spirit.
Occupied by the German army from 1940 to 1944, the hotel later experienced gradual decline due to the relocation of major roadways. It closed its doors in 1973, nearly giving way to a modern construction project — ultimately halted thanks to strong local support for its preservation.

1974

1984
A Revival True to Its Spirit (1984 – Today)
Listed as a Historic Monument in 1975 for its façade and roofs, the building was reborn in January 1982 under the ownership of the La Hénin group. Sold in 1984 to the Jacquier family, it joined the Sofitel collection in 1994 and later MGallery in 2013.
A major renovation in 2014–2015 enhanced the interiors and extended the Devosge Street wing, elevating the hotel while honoring its heritage.
Illustrious Guests and International Renown
Among its earliest distinguished guests was the actor Lekain, protégé of Voltaire, who stayed in April 1753. Napoleon III himself spent the night of June 1–2, 1856 at the hotel, acknowledging its exceptional standing.
Over the decades, artists, heads of state, and prominent figures from around the world have contributed to its international prestige.
